Listen: Who Am I To Stop It | Pigeonhole Podcast Episode 11: Intersectional Gender Equity in the Arts (Encore)

This is an encore presentation of a 2017 interview with Jane Vogel of Advance Gender Equity in the Arts (AGE) and filmmaker Gigi Williams. Advancing equity is not the same as increasing diversity. I’ve talked to people who genuinely celebrate being able to tick off “diversity boxes” when they hire an artist or a speaker for their organization. Woman? Check. Woman of color? Check. Woman of color with a disability? Check check check. This. Is. Not. Equity. That’s tokenizing and dehumanizing. And it’s not getting us closer to equity to feel proud that you hired someone who checks boxes because you’re still putting the focus on how great you are for thinking of it.

We talk about unconscious (or implicit) bias, intersectional equity, and the ways that art, theater, film, and stories have the capacity to advance equity and justice. In the conversation, we mentioned #NowMoreThanEver that Jane asked we use when promoting the unconscious bias symposium that AGE was putting on at the time. We recorded on January 20th, 2017. As we’re on the cusp of the possible nomination of Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, we all have to keep pushing, activists and artists alike.
